Images shot using the Portrait option will deliver a soft general impression, reproducing the subject’s skin with bright and smooth gradation while providing a three-dimensional feel. Image creation of a portrait, however, cannot be standardized. Based upon the images shot with the Neutral option, decrease the saturation drastically and increase the contrast to a certain level, and you will obtain a portrait displaying a stylish, chic atmosphere. This technique is particularly effective for achieving fashionable, male portraits.

  • Select a high-contrast shooting situation that is not bright overall and contains large shadow areas to achieve a result projecting a chic and mature atmosphere.
  • Select a background and clothes for the subject that display big differences of brightness to emphasize contrast.

Adjustment of parameter 1
Press ► of a multi selector to go to the adjustment display and set +3 for contrast and -2.25 for saturation.

Set +1 for clarity* and -0.25 for brightness.

*If you change clarity in live view shooting, the selected value will be applied to the image but cannot be seen on the live view display.

Further elaboration ― RAW processing with Capture NX-D

Elaborate your image further using Capture NX-D. You can change tones by adjusting white balance or add crispness by adjusting tone curve.

Step 1

Activate Capture NX-D and open the NEF (RAW) image* taken using Picture Control with the parameter adjusted as above within the camera.

*Even if the adjustments above were not applied to your image, if the image is taken in RAW, it is possible to make all the adjustments using Capture NX-D.

Step 2

Adjust white balance according to your preference.

Select incandescent for a cool impression

Select direct sunlight for a warmer impression

Step 3

Adjust finely using “Levels & Curves” to make the image look sharper.
