Lightweight and ruggedly constructed body with dust-prevention and weather-resistance employing magnesium alloy
The Df employs magnesium alloy for the top, rear and bottom covers. Despite its compact and lightweight body, it achieves high robustness and durability. Also, various points of the body are effectively sealed to attain superior dust-prevention and weather-resistant performance equivalent to that of the D800 series.
Highly durable and precise shutter mechanisms tested for 150,000 cycles
The Df employs a high-speed and high-precision sequential control mechanism that drives the shutter, mirror and aperture independently. The shutter has been tested for 150,000 cycles with the shutter unit and driving mechanism actually loaded to prove its high durability, appropriate for a precision, digital SLR camera. Furthermore, it also incorporates a compact self-diagnostic shutter monitor to maintain high precision accuracy. The shutter monitor checks and detects shutter speed variance between set or controlled shutter speed and actual speed constantly to achieve highly accurate shutter control with minimized variance.
Quiet shutter-release mode
The quiet shutter-release mode is suitable when you want to shoot with less mirror movement sound. For a single frame, the mirror does not click back into place while the shutter-release button is fully pressed, allowing delay of the timing of the click made by the mirror and insulating the sound by covering the camera with a cloth, which is also quieter than in single-frame mode. Simply select "Q" on the release mode dial to smoothly switch between single-frame mode and quiet shutter-release mode as needed. This is convenient for occasions such as a ceremony, school play or when taking pictures of wildlife, insects, or a sleeping child.
Quick and accurate response
Start-up time is only approx. 0.14 s* and release time lag is approx. 0.052 s*. The shutter-release button and power switch are coaxially located, realizing smooth transition from turning on the camera to releasing the shutter, while the grip shape does not hinder finger movement. All of this contributes to quick and comfortable shooting, helping you to capture unexpected photo opportunities.

High-speed continuous shooting at approx. 5.5 fps for up to 100 shots, that captures the decisive moment
The Df employs a high-speed and high-precision sequential control mechanism that drives the shutter, mirror and aperture independently. Combined with the enhanced speed of the image-processing engine EXPEED 3, high-speed continuous shooting at approx. 5.5 fps*1 in both FX and DX formats, for up to 100 shots*2 is realized. Using dynamic-area AF allows you to capture the decisive moment of a moving subject more precisely.

Compatible with high-speed SDXC UHS-I standard
The Df supports the SDXC UHS-I standard. Combined with the enhanced speed of the EXPEED 3 image-processing engine, it processes and writes image data of 16 megapixels at high speed. In high-speed continuous shooting, the number of available shots is 100 frames in JPEG*1 and 29 frames in RAW (lossless compressed/14-bit)*2. Also, Eye-Fi card (on the market) that allows wireless transmission of the taken images from a camera to a PC is supported.

Image area options
The Df allows you to shoot with two different image areas: FX format (36.0 x 23.9 mm) and DX format (23.4 x 15.5 mm). DX format offers an approx. 1.5x telephoto effect by using the required crop. Yet despite this effect, you can still expect the exceptional image quality of 6.8 megapixels for a variety of purposes thanks to the Df's large pixel count. When a DX NIKKOR lens is used, DX format is automatically selected, and the image area is visually marked in the viewfinder.
An efficient power circuit, the highly energy-efficient EXPEED 3 and other features reduce the power consumption of the Df. It adopts the small and energy efficient EN-EL14a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery. It is possible to shoot up to approx. 1,400 shots* of still images per one charge.
