“The lens mount is in our DNA. Continued use of the same mount allows the ongoing use of older NIKKOR lenses, offering photographers a broader range of lens work. As engineers, we’ve turned this apparent constraint to great advantage in further refining our mechanical designs.”

Nikon F-Mount

To protect your lens assets, Nikon has consistently used the same Nikon F-mount for over half a century, since we first introduced it on the Nikon F camera. This has permitted photographers to continue using their beloved, pride-and-joy Nikkor lenses, even with the latest digital camera technology. For example, the D3 and D300 cameras are equipped with a lateral chromatic aberration reduction function that enables the creation of images with minimal chromatic aberration at the periphery — even with older lenses that do not incorporate the latest optical designs. This lets photographers effectively use the distinctive characteristics of a much wider range of lenses. And of course, even though the D3 uses the Nikon FX format, it can also use specialized DX Nikkor lenses for shooting. This safeguarding of lens mount continuity through generation after generation of digital camera technology represents a massive benefit to photographers, and Nikon's abiding commitment to our users gives our design engineers the incentive and determination to consistently and effectively overcome this perceived design hurdle.
