Support for Live View

Photography in Live View’s Handheld Mode
Handheld mode uses the 51 AF Points — ideal for situations where it’s difficult to use the viewfinder.
Photography in Live View’s Tripod Mode
Tripod mode uses high-precision Contrast-detect AF, useful for shooting still life photography in a studio.

Handheld mode using a wide viewing angle, high-definition LCD for easy composition, and Tripod mode with precision Contrast-detect AF

The 12-channel high-speed readout from the image sensor and high-speed image-processing engine enable the Live View function, thereby displaying subjects on an LCD monitor in real time. Two modes are available — handheld mode for situations where it’s difficult to look through the viewfinder, such as in ultra-low or ultra-high-angle shooting; and Tripod mode for conducting still life photography using a tripod at a studio. Nikon has also introduced Contrast-detect AF, to provide high focusing accuracy, indispensable for still life photography when using Tripod mode. Since a photographer can use any point in the imaging sensor as a focus point, without limitations, he or she can choose from a much wider area than the 51-point AF areas for extra-sharp results. And because the filter for focus detection is incorporated in the image-processing engine as hardware, fast autofocus is achieved for high-precision Contrast-detect AF. Focusing can also be controlled while confirming an image on a PC monitor used as a remote finder connected via a USB cable or wireless LAN. The optional Camera Control Pro 2 enables various additional AF operations including AF point selection and shutter release from a PC. Support for HDMI also allows for shooting while displaying a High-Definition image on a TV monitor.
