The D3 uses high-performance CF cards, a data recording medium highly trusted by professional photographers (Microdrives are also supported). To improve the practical benefits for these professionals, Nikon designed twin CF card slots, which were previously considered too difficult to incorporate due to space limitations. When a camera is considered as a system, using different types of memory cards for slots leads to complications and double slots rarely function as expected. In addition, the capability to manage all data with a single type of storage media is a major advantage for professionals at the heart of the action, where a moment defines everything.
The twin CF card slots can be used in four ways to make workflow after shooting more efficient:
1) Successive recording from one card to the next.
2) Simultaneous recording onto two cards for backup protection.
3) Recording RAW and JPEG simultaneously to separate cards.
4) Transferring data from one card to another.
