Profile

Born in Hiroshima in 1937, Nakatani graduated from the Department of Photographic Technique, Tokyo Junior College of Photography (currently Tokyo Polytechnic) in 1957. After working at Tokyo Shimbun (newspaper), he became a freelancer in 1960. Nakatani's works in reportage, portraiture, landscapes, sports and on historic themes have been published widely in photography magazines as well as in various periodicals and books.
Published monographs include "Doto: Okhotsk-to Gen-ya-to Mizuumi-to", "Snapshot-yeno Michi", "Moeru Rugby Jidai", "Sports Ningen-zo", "Karei-naru Sports Lady", "Shumi-no Shasin Nyumon", "No-side no Fue-ga Naru" and "Kagurazaka Story". Major exhibitions include "Soubou 60-nen", "Toyo-to Seiyo-no Aida", "Subarashiki-kana Soccer", "Orugoru-iro no Hikari", "Hiroshima: Sengo 10-nen", "Akogare-no Tokyo-wo Utsushite 40-nen", "Shasin Itchokusen", "Tokara Retto 1961”,and “Shashin x Haiku”.
He currently has a serial in the Shinno-Mainichi Shimbun (newspaper) titled “Photo x Haiku,” a fresh new expression that fuses photography with haiku.He was awarded the Geijutsu Shinjin Prize in 1964 and is presently a member of the Japan Professional Photographers Society, an honorary member of Association Japon de la Presse Sportive, the Photographic Society of Japan and the Japan Photographic Art Society. He is also a committee member of the Kanto Branch of the All-Japan Association of Photographic Societies and teaches a course in photography at NHK Culture Center. Nakatani additionally presides over Nakatani-Kai/MSPC and is a member of Itteki-kai.
