Adjustments and registration of Picture Controls
Custom Picture Control

You can save the settings of your personal adjustments in Picture Control in the camera so that you can use them again easily. For example, if you have made a special adjustment such as “reproducing a child with a gentle atmosphere in bright sunshine” and you intend to use the same setting again in a similar situation, you can register the setting and save it in the camera, so that you can easily find it the next time it is needed. You can save up to nine* custom Picture Controls in a D-SLR camera compatible with Picture Control.

*The number of custom Picture Control settings able to be registered in a camera depends on the specifications of models to be released in the future.

Two ways to create a custom Picture Control

1) Creating inside the camera

Edit the parameters based on the built-in Picture Control, which can be registered as a new Picture Control of your own style. You can create a Picture Control customized according to your preferences via simple operation.

Note:

  • Custom Picture Controls created with other cameras can be transferred to your camera via memory card and you can then register them.
  • Custom Picture Controls created with the D810 cannot be transferred to cameras released before the D810 (as of June 26, 2014).

Register a custom Picture Control after you have edited Picture Control.

Your custom Picture Control is indicated in the Picture Control list.

2) Creating with Picture Control Utility 2, a dedicated Picture Control management and adjustment software

Custom Picture Controls can also be created with Picture Control Utility 2 (can be downloaded from Nikon's website free of charge). With Picture Control Utility 2, adjustment by using a custom tone curve is also possible, which enables you to adjust the subtle brightness and contrast while checking in real-time with the preview display. A custom Picture Control created with Picture Control Utility 2 is automatically registered in the Picture Control list of ViewNX 2 and Capture NX-D in the same computer, which can be applied to any RAW image. It can be transferred to a camera via memory card and registered in the camera.

Note:

  • When using Picture Control Utility 2, select the file type of Picture Control of the camera you use from NCP (cameras that support custom Picture Control) or NP2 (D810 or cameras released after the D810). The default setting shows the selection guide after installing Picture Control Utility 2.
  • A custom Picture Control created with NP2 can only be used with the D810 or cameras released after the D810. If you select NP2 and change the setting, then change the file type to NCP, the number of decimal places of the setting will be rounded up.
