Why would you purchase a Micro lens ?
What images a Micro lens could capture ?
Are Micro lenses heavy and should be normally used with a tripod ?

Q. Why would you purchase a Micro lens?

Micro lenses are for close-up photography of flowers and insects. I'm not particularly interested in this field of photography, so why would I purchase a Micro lens?

A. Expand your individual expression with a Micro lens.

Micro lenses are being used for a wide variety of scenes these days, and continue to gain popularity with all types of users. Micro lenses are used to capture images with a unique and more appealing feel for use on blogs and online auctions. Micro lenses are excellent for capturing a pet's most heartwarming expression or for taking pictures of food that look as delicious and appetizing as the real thing. Do you make your own jewelry or have some other creative hobby? Micro lenses are the best option for capturing images of your creations that express your own sense of style.
The unique feature of Micro lenses is that they make it possible to capture an object that fills the entire image frame. This allows for the artistic expression of ambience as well as the visual expression of a variety of senses the photographer may wish to portray. Micro lenses can capture the sparkle of jewelry, the softness or smoothness of children's skin, and the juiciness of food.
With standard kit lenses, objects cannot generally be photographed from the short distances supported by Micro lenses. Therefore, images captured with kit lenses often contain more than the desired object. For example, when photographing a dish of food with a kit lens, portions of the room or table setting included in the frame must also be considered. With the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR lens, however, it is possible to capture only the dish of food. Micro lenses enable creative photography that reflects individual intent. Photographs that exceed the imagination are possible. This lens will revolutionize the way in which your photographs communicate your individual creativity.

Q. What images a Micro lens could capture?

I have a compact digital camera. I'm quite sure that I can take the same sorts of pictures using the camera's macro or close-up mode...

A. Add your own feel for rich expression.

The quality of images captured with a compact digital camera differs. As digital-SLR cameras acquire a large amount of light information, they are able to reproduce details not readily visible with the naked eye such as the incredible smoothness and fullness of a child's skin or the very fine downy hairs on a baby's face. This is the advantage of the combination of digital-SLR camera and a Micro lens.
Therefore, when shooting with a Micro lens, it is best to have an idea of exactly which portion of which subject you want to photograph. Have fun with the lens. Try various techniques, such as focusing on a point slightly in front of or behind your subject, for more creative forms of expression.

Q. Are Micro lenses heavy and should be normally used with a tripod?

I'd like to try a Micro lens, but I'm still a little unsure. Aren't Micro lenses rather heavy? And aren't they normally used with a tripod?

A. For normal shooting or for creative and artistic photographs
The AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR makes it easy.

It is true that these are common impressions of conventional macro photography. However, none of these concerns apply to the new AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR lens.
The full length of the lens is just 98.5 mm. At roughly 355 grams, the weight of the lens has been reduced to less than half that of conventional Micro lenses(1*).
In addition, the lens offers a built-in vibration reduction function (VR II) for effective hand-held shooting without a tripod. As the in-focus range is smaller with macro photography, even the slightest amount of blur can ruin the image. This macro lens, however, is equipped with the VR function that compensates for camera shake, significantly reducing such failures.
Though Micro lenses are considered specialty lenses, the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR lens was developed with emphasis on the ability to be used with normal photography as well. This makes it a very convenient lens for simple capture of a wide variety of subjects from portraits to landscapes.
Nikon is very proud of this lens that supports not only macro photography with artistic and creative feel unique to the individual photographer, but can also be used for normal shooting.
